French Dip in Los Angeles – Philippe The Original

French Dip in Los Angeles – Philippe The Original

Evan (16) plays volleyball for a club in Las Vegas. His team had a tournament in Los Angeles over Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend. So we packed our bags and made a short trip over to LA. While we were there, we made sure to pay a visit to one of the city’s classic lunch spots to enjoy a true French Dip in Los Angeles at Philippe The Original. Needless to say, we loved it and we highly recommend you give it a try.

Evan (16) enjoys his first bite.

Philippe – The Original sits at 1001 N. Alameda St. near downtown Los Angeles. They are open from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. seven days a week. The also provide ample free parking across the street.

They have a decent menu, but the only reason to visit Philippe’s is their famous French Dipped Sandwiches. They claim to have invented this classic sandwich in 1918 when the owner, Philippe Mathieu, accidentally dropped a sandwich roll into a roasting pan full of juice. Another version of the story says he made it on a lark for a local municipal worker. To make matters more interesting, there is a rival restaurant, Cole’s, who claims to have invented the sandwich. Regardless of the origin, Evan and I think you should consider trying a French Dip in Los Angeles at Philippe The Original.

As you can see from the above menu, you may order the sandwich with either beef, pork, lamb, NY pastrami, ham or turkey. You specify if you want it single dip, double dip, or wet. They recommend you try it with Cole slaw and lemonade. Evan and I each ordered that with a classic beef – double dipped. We enjoyed every bite.
